OAKLEIGH HONORED AT RM HATCH MEDAL NIGHT On a night where Coburg were crowned VSDCA Champions and Robert Bartlett (Mt Waverley) awarded the RM Hatch Medal as most outstanding player in the competition, Oakleigh once again confirmed their credentials as a Sub District powerhouse by being named Club Champions and having a record two players selected in the Team of the Year.
The immediate past association President Ken Fewster was on hand to present the trophy struck in his honor to a gleeful Oakleigh contingent who again reigned supreme for a record third time in this most exalted of company. Co-Assistant Coaches, Simon Street and Ben Pinwill were also rightly honored with selection in the 'Team of the Year'. The first time two Oakleigh players had been selected in one season. While nothing will replace the premierships lost, these awards go someway to recognise the outstanding season by the premier club in the competition. In a season in which he played his 150th First XI game almost certainly en route to becoming only the second Oakleigh player in its long and storied history to amass 200 Subbies First XI matches, Ben 'Spike' Pinwill completed statistically the best performance by an Oakleigh player since the lofty heights of the legendary Ron Howland in the mid 1980's. In just his second season at Oakleigh Simon Street joined an extremely rare group of players to be awarded a place in the VSDCA Team of the Year. Carrying on his exceptional form from last year's final series where Streety almost brought home the Championship Final Trophy with a majestic half century, Simon's appetite for runs grew as the season progressed. Five hundred and nineteen runs peppered with 5 half centuries at the imposing average of 43.3, not to menion his competition leading 36 dismissals behind the stumps was warranted reward for the hard work put in over many months and his appointment into the Subbies XI was richly deserved.
OAKLEIGH REGAIN KEN FEWSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPThe Oakleigh Cricket Club have been crowned the 2009/10 VSDCA Ken Fewster Club Champions for a record third time after the final round was washed out. Oakleigh finished on 225 points well clear of close rival Melton who won the award last season on 209 points. It is an incredible acknowledgment to the players, officials and coaching group that Oakleigh have again been able to climb the mountain after the heartbreak of 2 second place finishes and a third in the last three years. This award clearly stamps OCC as the premier club in Sub District cricket.
